Tranquebar Coffee Table
Tranquebar Coffee Table is a collectible design piece that presents the ancient hand carving heritage of South India in dialogue with renowned contemporary designer Boris Berlin. Calyah’s new Nordic maximalism is expressed through the geometrical silhouette and the ancient hand carving craft. The organic shape combined with strong materiality tells a unique story to be passed on to the next generation.
The acclaimed designer Boris Berlin and Calyah’s founder Nigel Majakari travelled together through rural villages and along the Bay of Bengal coast of Tamil Nadu in search of the finest ancient craftsmanship. Meeting with traditional artisans to learn about the culture of stone craftsmanship, their journey and meetings resulted in a collaboration with the finest skilled artisans. Finding his inspiration in the colours, the shapes, and the culture of Tamil Nadu the distinctive pattern and organic shapes materialised in collaboration with master craftsman Mahdevan and his artisanal family.

Each piece of granite is unique with natural variations in the pattern. There may be sand holes, glass veins and porosities on the surface. All of this occurs naturally and is part of the individual character of the object. The surface of the stone is hand polished according to the designers specification. The hand carved pattern engraved into the stone is brushed with natural coconut oil to bring out the dark tones in the granite to match the colour of the polished surface. Over time these areas will require a light brushing with natural oil to maintain the dark tones.
